Solo fantasia‘ was the inaugural piece of the Ninth Biennial of Nicaragua that was held despite the sudden expulsion of the artist and exclusion of the work, by direct mandate of the Nicaraguan Government Ortega-Murillo four hours before its official programming. The performance consists of a pilgrimage in Nicaragua’s capital city’s main venue towards the place where presidential acts occur. The artist is wearing a vestido de fantasia (fantasy
dress) informed by the local cultural practice “Baile de Negras”, where men dress as extravagant Spaniards women to mock colonial powers. The artist's dress represents a visual journey of the aesthetics used by governments in power in the country‘s recent history. Their intervention is claiming space for queer bodies. It challenges the notions of control and ownership over the revolutionary discourse in the history of their country, taking back power for queer futurity.
