OFRENDA
In the video Ofrenda [Offering] 2021, the artist is depicted removing a sieve mask that was pinned to the skin of their face, leaving a trail of blood that falls on their naked, mud-covered body. The mask has its origins in Indigenous celebrations in Monimbó, Nicaragua; in the late 1970s, it was used by young rebels during the insurrection againstthe Somoza dictatorship and more recently by the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. After removing the mask, the artist chews and spits it out. The work is a ritual action that addresses the violence of mestizaje, the ideology of whitening, and the colonial wounds derived from the erasure of queer and Indigenous heritage.
