LA INTRANSITABLE RUTA CHONTAL
“La intransitable ruta chontal” is a long-term ceramic and performance based project in which I’m working at the archeological site “Piedras Pintadas” located in Villa Sandino, Chontales, Nicaragua, where my family is from and where I grew up. This site contains between 1,500-2,000 petroglyphs carved on 158 stones, dating from the period of 200 to 800 BC. I will create a ceramic piece for each one of the petroglyphs, becoming a number of different series throughout my lifetime.
I’m re-imagining these petroglyphs as performative sculptures that could have been used for ceremonial purposes. I then take the ceramic pieces with chontal petroglyphs back to the archaeological site to ask for permission, present them to my ancestors and affirm from them, their acknowledgment and blessing to build -in their memory- the futures I’m called to create with my art practice.
